Book Review: The House on Boulevard Street by David Kirby

Yes! I can see clearly now, the rain is gone . . .”

and other clever lyrics (always sneaking up as a surprise!)
kept me laughing for 151 pages and I highly recommend this
southern poet who casts a beguiling literary and hilarious
spell over the way he sees the world!

David Kirby 004

This man would be a howl to sit next to at dinner.
He has the most outlandish sense of humor and can
direct it in words in a silly roundabout fashion, dragging
in Shakespeare, Dante and any other poets you’ve heard of
or haven’t!

The book was published in 2007 and has forty brief poems
–in scattered stanza form–highlighting Kirby’s experiences
in life, from teaching classes in English at Florida State
University, to touring the cities of Europe and collecting and
selecting only the best anecdotes ever possible from his down
to earth chats with just about any living person he meets.

While grading his students’ papers, he agonizes–reading
“Anyways, I’m going to lay down.”   and  “She gave it to
Cody and I.”

He has a polished touch with current day celebrities and a
special affinity for the rock and roll stars of the 50s—and he
slips them into the poems, too,  and soon all of you are laughing
away at the craziness of how life treats us one and all.

Kirby is an award winner many times over, and his writing
carries you away–fast, moving thoughts charging down the
page.  You can’t stop reading, and why would you want to?

I have never heard of Kirby before. This book sounds like a lot of fun. Funny poetry takes a special kind of talent.

Hi Stefanie—you know a lot about poetry and I think
you might like to try David Kirby. It’s not just silly
either (though I like those parts best!) but more
“intelligent funniness” if I can make that strange combination.
There are several books he’s written—this might be early. Thanks
      for stopping by.
