We left the little library at Diamond Point and were told that
we would love the Warrensburg library—it was all redone!
Too bad–because we like the looks of old libraries . . . but away we
went. It’s only 5 miles from Diamond Point to Warrensburg NY. You
leave the lakeshore road of 9N and turn right onto Diamond Point Road
(or route 35 if you’re a stickler for route numbers.)
The lake views were gone, but we soon bumped into the Schroon River
near Warrensburg–there used to be a “humming” bridge on the way,
but I guess that’s been redone.
O’Half navigated and we found The Richards Library at
36 Elm Street on a big block of land.
Hey! Is that a Nancy Drew type house nearby??
This granite stone library was a generous gift from two sisters ages ago–
in fact, the library just celebrated its 114th birthday. The Richards sisters–
one a Miss and one a Mrs. provided the building, the land and a healthy
endowment.
Looks like they kept the old look of the fireplace as you walk in
but the rest of the library is updated and
clean and bright.
These little libraries in the small towns we visited are open every weekday and
Saturdays. Valuable town assets.
I like this one, too! I’ll bet the children love the semicircle room.
Is that pronounced “Skroon” or “Shroon” River?
Hi Booksilver–it’s Skroon—and only 5 miles away! Seemed
much farther than that when we’d play Warrensburg in “away”
basketball games, riding the bus at night . . .
I like the coziness of the children’s area. What a wonderful legacy that the Richards sisters left!
Hi Buttondeb—Yes, it’d be interesting to delve
a little deeper into the history of those sisters.
Great windows in the children’s room! What a wonderful idea you had visiting all the libraries in the area. Looking forward to more!
Thanks for following along–
